Event Description

Women in Geospatial Nepal, in collaboration with NAXA and The Asia Foundation under the Data for Development program, is organising GeoFest 2024 - a platform designed to encourage innovation, inclusivity and diversity, foster collaboration, and provide networking opportunities for students, professionals and researchers in the geospatial field. With a specific target of achieving 50% participation of women, GeoFest 2024 primarily emphasizes the empowerment of women in the sector, creating a platform that not only encourages their involvement but also highlights the importance of gender balance in advancing geospatial technology and applications. However, the registration is open for all with specific conditions as mentioned in the registration form.

GeoFest is a one-day in-person event designed to challenge geospatial enthusiasts to develop innovative ideas using open geospatial data and present solutions. The event includes pre-event webinars, team formation, project development, and a final pitch session, with opportunities for mentorship and networking. The anticipated outputs from the event include but are not limited to prototypes, story maps, cartographic presentations, data dashboards and data visualization.
Who can apply?
We welcome aspiring leaders across geospatial domain from diverse fields such as Geomatics, Environmental Science, Agriculture, Geography, Public Health, Civil Engineering, and others. This opportunity is open to students, recent graduates, and early-career professionals.
Thematic Areas
The four specific thematic areas are Climate Change and Environment, Sustainable Cities and Urban Planning, Digital Governance, and Disaster Risk Reduction and Management. These themes will guide the development of their ideas and ensure that the solutions presented are relevant and impactful. A key component of each idea shall be the incorporation of Open Geospatial Data. This requirement is central to the challenge, ensuring that participants utilize real-world, publicly available geospatial information in their solutions.
How to Participate?
  1. Register: Register as a team or an individual by October 28, 2024.
  2. Confirm: WiG Nepal team will reach out to each registered teams or individuals to confirm composition of team members. A team of 3 individuals is a pre-requisite thus, individual participants will also be grouped and formed a team.
  3. Submit: Teams shall submit their preliminary ideas.
  4. Selection: Only selected teams will be provided with the opportunity to attend the main event.
  5. Prepare: Familiarize yourself with the event's theme and challenges. Attend our pre-workshops and webinars to get insights and tips.
  6. Pitch: Present your idea on the main event to a panel of judges and fellow participants. The main event shall take place in the third week of November.
Rules & Guidelines
  1. Code of Conduct: All participants must adhere to our event guidelines as mentioned above.
  2. Judging Criteria: Projects will be evaluated based on innovation, technical implementation, scalability, impact and alignment with the event’s themes.
